Excerpt from A Greek and English Dictionary, Comprising All the Words in the Writings of the Most Popular Greek Authors: With the Difficult Inflections in Them and in the Septuagint and New Testament, Designed for the Use of Schools and the Undergraduate Course of a Collegiate Education
These additions have extended this work a little beyond the size of Schre velius, while nothing useful or material has been omitted There are indeed no references given or authorities cited, experience having shown the com piler that young students pay no attention to many of those assistances Wtl'l more advanced scholars look for in Dictionaries; while these receive very little benefit from that scanty portion of references or quotations which can be given in a book adapted to the use of schools. Accordingly, after very mature consideration, every thing has been retrenched that did not coo lucide with the young scholar's capacity and the room thus made has been filled up with what more usually catches his attention. He has here given to him what he will notice at present, instead of what he may look for at a more advanced period of his studies. He has laid before him what will be immediately useful, for what might be serviceable hereafter. Very few phrases are given, and that only when an indeclinable part of speechfjoined with another -word, may be construed briefly by an adverbial expression. All this plan could not be put in practice at first, for the propriety of some parts of it occurred only during the progress of the work; but it has been very strictly adhered to in the course of two rigid revisals that the work received before it went to the press.
