This book provides a brief, descriptive history of iconography together with a discussion of the canons and laws which govern this ancient art form. There is an increasing awareness among Western Christians that the icon is not merely a work of art but is also an aspect of divine revelation and of our communication with God in the Church. Quenot's analysis of various icons and their theological elements enables the reader to appreciate the many aspects of the icon more fully. It includes a discussion of discoveries and recent scholarship from catacomb art through Egyptian, Byzantine, Balkan, Russian and contemporary examples of iconography.
