Le 26 août 1914, lors de la prise de Cambrai par les Allemands, pendant que nos braves soldats se battaient dans les rues de la ville, j'étais rentré chez moi, ému par le bruit de la bataille et dans l'anxiété de ce qui se passait; ma pensée était particulièrement pour mes chers absents et je me mis â leur écrire. Le lendemain et les jours suivants, je continuai à le faire, sans que mes lettres puissent jamais partir. Bien vite je dus abandonner complètement l'espoir de faire parvenir aux miens des nouvelles de ma fille et de moi-même, mais ma lettre fut quand même prolongée chaque jour.
Plus tard, je ne pensais plus d l'intention primitive et ma missive devint un journal où chaque jour, presque â chaque heure, je jetais sur le papier, avec une absolue spontanéité, mes impressions sur les événements. Les - faits et les choses se trouvaient ainsi analysés au fur et â mesure qu'ils se produisaient, et cela en toute indépendance, et avec l'impartialité la plus grande.
Depuis, j'ai décidé que je publierais ce journal; j'estime qu'il pourra être curieux de suivre au jour le jo'ur les sentiments engendrés par les événements qui se succédaient.
