Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 360pp+illus. Dj worn on edges. Not price-clipped. Bookplate inside cover but still a very clean copy internally. PLEASE NOTE: Dust jacket is the original illustrated cover with a red curtained stage setting, not as shown above as stock image. 360pp+illus. The story of popular actor Philip Yale Drew and his terrible ordeal when he was accused of the murder of a Reading tobacconist in 1929. There was public outcry at his treatment that led to Parliamentary action against the unsatisfactory "trial by Coroner", but even massive support did not save Drew's career. Taken from interviews with members of his family and even the Coroner, a superb analysis of an extraordinary and disturbing case. Index. Seller Inventory # 000705

The Print Room
(Lilley nr Luton, United Kingdom)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine slightly sunned, very slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (£3.75), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 360pp, illustrated. A fascinating account of the fairly unspectacular murder of a shopkeeper in Reading in June 1929 and the subsequent police investigation. The murder looked like a routine robbery with violence, although the violence was excessive for someone mainly intent on emptying the till. The local police applied to Scotland Yard for assistance and were sent a heavyweight detective team in Chief Inspector James Berrett and Det. Sgt Jack Harris. Routine enquiries ensued but a month later, Berrett was no nearer an arrest until someone mentioned to the local chief inspector that the description of a man wanted for questioning exactly fitted an actor appearing at the local theatre during the week of the murder. The suspect was Philip Yale Drew, then 49 years old and an alcoholic who suffered from the DTs. Egan details the rise and fall of the actor's career from his birth in Massachusetts, through his glory years as a cowboy actor using the stage name of Young Buffalo to his decline. Egan's account deals in detail with the evidence the police had which led them to believe in his guilt and how this was presented to the coroner's enquiry (Amazon review). Seller Inventory # 003103
