9780230521612: Transforming the Golden-Age Nation State (Transformations of the State)

Synopsis

This collection examines the transformation of the modern Western state in an age of accelerated globalization. Arguing that the state experienced a 'golden age' in the 1960s and 1970s, the contributors explore how and why this configuration of the state is under pressure in the 21st century. State functions are increasingly privatized or internationalized indicating a shift to a 'post-national' state and the book traces these tranformations through fields as diverse as taxation, transnational business law, internet governance and education policy.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover, xvi + 213 pages, NOT ex-library. A mild crease/indentation to lower inner corner of first leaves, minor wear to tips of corners. Interior is clean, bright, untanned, with unmarked text and firm binding. Boards show small indentations to edges and along spine, gently bumped upper outer corner of front panel, short creases to spine ends, a few small scuff-marks. Published without a dust jacket. -- The 1960s and 1970s witnessed the 'golden age' for the modern western state: peace and physical security, liberty and legal certainty, democratic self determination, and economic growth and social welfare were the norm, and the state was at the apex of its development. This volume argues that in today's era of accelerated globalization, with more and more state functions becoming privatized and internationalized, the golden-age nation state has changed dramatically and is in decline. This volume traces these ongoing transformations from multiple perspectives, examining the full range of state activity from taxation and education policy to transnational business law and internet governance to explore the role of the state in the 21st century and consider the full impact of its demise. --- Contents: The Golden-Age Nation State and Its Transformation: A Framework for Analysis / Achim Hurrelmann; Europe, the Nation State and Taxation / Susanne Uhl; Internationalization of Intervention? UN and EU Security Politics and the Modern State / Sebastian Mayer & Silke Weinlich; From Diffusion to Interplay: Rethinking the Constitutional State in the Age of Global Legal Pluralism / Martin Herberg; Transformations of Commercial Law: New Forms of Legal Certainty for Globalized Exchange Processes? / Gralf-Peter Calliess; Breaking the Nation State Shell: Prospects for Democratic Legitimacy in the International Domain / Jens Steffek; Governing the Internet: The Quest for Legitimate and Effective Rules / Ralf Bendrath; The Internationalization of Education Policy: Towards Convergence of National Paths? / Kerstin Martens & Ansgar Weymann; The Role of the Nation State in the Internationalization of Accounting Regimes / Jochen Zimmermann; The Tranformation of the Golden-Gge Nation State: Findings and Perspectives / Achim Hurrelmann.
