Excerpt: ... THE RUSSIAN SERVICE, AND WAR IN TURKEY. BY CORNET DE LACY PIERSK. the revolution in Ireland in 1691 sent many warriors into foreign service; and amongst others the famous Marshals Lacy and Browne, and several of their relations. Maurice De Lacy Pierse, the writer of the accompanying letters, and nephew of the last General Maurice De Lacy of Grodno, was an estimable youth, and an Officer in the Russian Service, seeking to emulate the deeds and fame of his ancestors, but unhappily cut off before Adrianople in 1829, in the flower of his youth, and to the great grief of his affectionate family. The following are extracts of his letters to his sister, Mrs. De Lacy Nash, of London, and may serve as an Appendix to the several articles in this Magazine on the Russian Service. "My health cannot be better, and in fact did I not possess good health, I would never be able to bear the fatigues of the Russian service. I have not known the least inconvenience from the climate; winter agrees with me as well as I could wish; also summer, which is extremely warm in this part of the Russian empire. I cannot describe to you the plenty in which we have the necessaries of life here; excellent beef and mutton is bought for about four farthings Russian money, bread proportionably cheap. "My worthy Colonel continues as attentive to me as he was at the commencement; also many other worthy men whom I have the pleasure of knowing here; we are now, after returning from Saratoff, where the regiment, with three others of cavalry, were reviewed by the Commander-inChief; I find the duty and exercise agreeable enough; I make some progress in the language, which 1 found to be the greatest difficulty in the beginning, but now know enough to do my duty.
