9780205051656: An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds (Mysearchlab)

Synopsis

A Literary, Historical, and Contemporary Perspective of the Bible

Introduction to the Bible approaches the Bible by considering it from three different viewpoints: literary, historical, and contemporary. This unique approach underscores the dynamics of each view and the methods scholars have developed to study them.

Additionally, the authors are especially careful to distinguish the historical and literary 'viewpoints' for students new to the discipline; encouraging them to consider and discuss the contemporary significance of the Bible.

Teaching and Learning Experience

Improve Critical Thinking - Introduction to the Bible provides an analysis of the role of the Bible in contemporary American culture; stimulates students' awareness of Biblical thought through suggested readings related to contemporary ethical issues; shows the relevance of religious thought; and helps students examine their assumptions, discern hidden values, evaluate evidence, assess their conclusions, and more!

Engage Students - Introduction to the Bible encourages thoughtful discussion and reflection of contents — including biblical controversies — through chapter summaries, case studies, maps and charts.

Support Instructors - Teaching your course just got easier!  You can create a Customized Text or use our Instructor’s Manual, or PowerPoint Presentation Slides.  Plus, Introduction to the Bible provides an annotated list of movies and documentary films related to the Bible, and information on how to obtain them for classroom use.

Review

The writing style is especially accessible to the average undergraduate, it seems to me. The exercises at the end of each chapter are also especially helpful, and I very much liked the case study format the featured three hypothetical students.

-Professor Gerald Vigna, Alvernia University

The division of the material into the "three worlds" is wonderful! The conclusion is very helpful in orienting students to the use of and importance of the Bible in culture.

-Instructor Cheryl Rhodes, Coastal Carolina University and University of South Carolina

The "three worlds" approach makes it very easy to introduce students to literary and historical approaches to the text, and gives them (and me) a clear indication of when we're switching gears and interpreting the text through different lenses.

-Professor Shannon Grimes, Meredith College

I appreciate that the text is not overly doctrinaire. This is a departmental choice, yet each member of the department can use it and bring out her/his own personality while using the text.

-Professor J Babban, Chowan University

One thing I really like about it is it is up date on recent biblical scholarship.

-Professor David Torbett, Marietta College

From the Author

A new edition of this book is now available!
The fourth edition of AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE is now available. It includes new material on the controversial Jesus Seminar, updates on Biblical archaeology, more discussion of new methods of study of the Bible, discussion of the Bible and the environmental crisis, and more. Teachers and students using the book have found it readable, balanced, and up-to-date. In the new edition there are questions for discussion of the contemporary relevance of the Bible linked to particular Biblical readings. It has been used in college classes, church study groups, and by individual readers interested in serious study of the Bible. The authors each have taught courses in Biblical studies at Westminster College in Missouri for several decades. We draw on our classroom experience and our own research interests. Chris Hauer's focus is on the historical world, including the use of social scientific methods in illuminating the Bible. Bill Young's particular interest is the literary study of the Bible. We both would appreciate receiving comments from readers. Thanks for considering the book!
