This new edition has been expanded to contain an introduction to areas of current importance such as bifurcation, structural stability and chaotic behavior. Other topics include linearization, perturbation theory, subharmonics, stability, the existence of limit cycles, and Poincare maps. The text is concerned with practical applications and includes over 400 examples and exercises."

On the second edition: "The subject has wide applications in physical, biological, and social sciences which continuously supply new problems of practical and theoretical importance. The book does a good job in motivating the reader in such pursuits, and presents the subject in a simple but elegant style." --P. K. Kythe in Applied Mechanics ReviewsOn the first edition: "The book can profitably be used in a senior undergraduate course. It is well written, well motivated and contains some recent developments of interest which have not been readily accessible before at this level." --V. Prior to his retirement, Dominic Jordan was a professor in the Mathematics Department at Keele University. His research interests include applications of applied mathematics to elasticity, asymptotic theory, wave and diffusion problems, as well as research on the development of applied mathematics in its close association with late 19th century engineering technologies. Peter Smith is a professor in the Mathematics Department of Keele University. He has taught courses in mathematical methods, applied analysis, dynamics, stochastic processes, and nonlinear differential equations, and his research interests include fluid dynamics and applied analysis.
