Synopsis

Volume VIII of the "History of Universities" contains the customary mix of learned articles, book reviews, research notes and bibliographical information which makes this annual publication a useful tool for the historian of higher education. The present volume carries a wide range of articles covering the early history of Europe's universities, as well as their later development. The authors and contributors are drawn from all parts of the western world giving the journal an international flavour. Of particular note is the article by the German historian, Notker Hammerstein, on the role of the university in the creation of the modern world. Specifically taking issue with the traditional belief that the universities of the 18th century were antediluvian fossils, he argues that the modern western mind was the product of the European, specifically German, law school, not the scientific academy.
