9780195622560: The Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag (Oxford India Paperbacks)

Most of Jim Corbett's books contain collections of stories that recount adventures tracking and shooting man-eaters in the Indian Himalaya. This volume, however, consists of a single story, often considered the most exciting of all Corbett's jungle tales. He gives a carefully-detailed account of a notorious leopard that terrorized life in the hills of the colonial United Provinces. This story represents Corbett's most sustained and unique effort.

About the Author:

Edward James Corbett was born 25th July 1875 of English ancestry in Nainital districts of Uttarakhand. He grew up spending much of his childhood exploring the wilderness that exists around. Jim Corbett lived his life amidst dense jungle and developed a deep knowledge of the way. Sir Jim Corbett spent his major part of his life at Gurney House (located in Nainital) with his large family, his mother Mary Jane Corbett and his sister Margaret Winfred Corbett, fondly called Maggie. His father, who was postmaster in Nainital died when Jim Corbett was four. The whole responsibility fell to Corbett's mother to raise and educate 12 children on a widow's meager pension. Soon after an early age Jim Corbett has to face with the responsibility of supporting his family of six members so he took up a job with the railways. The fable of Edward Jim Corbett is still persisting in the minds and hearts of the people of Garhwal and Kumaon. People all over the world know Jim Corbett from his fabulous writings as a famous hunter who later became the adversary of many notorious man-eaters. There are four biographies on him and three films on his life that displays the lucid accounts of his exploits that he has given in his books.

Review:

It is unfair that Sir Jim Corbett, along with his phenomenal hunting dexterity, was fantastically skilled at writing and narrating events. I understand that Jungle and Animal related events can by themselves create a sort of affinity with the reader, but having said that, i would not like to take credit away from Sir Corbett for his gripping expression of the events that took place while he was on the trail of the Rudraprayag Man Eating Leopard. The engaging writing made everything seem so real, as if watching someone from my window. --By Darpan on 26 March 2014

Thrilling experience. After reading this book I concluded that his name is deserve to given one of the National Parks in India for his service to Innocent people of those days. He risked his life so many times to save those rudraprayaga area people from man eating leopard. --By Dileep K. on 22 November 2016

Jim Corbett is one of those few writers who have a natural talent for writing. Reading this book was amazing and it was very hard to put down. Feels just like you are actually present there with Corbett in first person. This book is one of those few books which you don't want to end since you enjoy the reading but still want to know the end. --By Tajender on 6 September 2016
