For the psychology of women or psychology of gender course. This textbook is well written, with numerous pedagogical aids that help students learn more effectively. It's also completely updated, with more than 1,300 new references. This is the kind of book that students enjoy reading and that professors respect. Features: * Conscientious attention to pedagogy: Chapter Outline, true/false pretest, demonstrations, boldface type for new terms, section summaries, chapter review questions, recommended readings. These are all there to help students master the terminology and concepts being covered in the text. * 4 themes traced throughout the text: Helps students see consistent trends and continuities across the discipline. These are outlined in Chapter 1, or consult the subject index under Themes 1, 2, 3,and 4 to see how often the themes are used throughout the book. These are used throughout the text to help reinforce the general ideas presented. * Interesting and engaging writing style. Draws students into the text. Students often report that their roommates, friends, and relatives have also been reading the book. * Very complete and up-to-date revision. In Psychology of Women, attitudes about gender and the characteristics of women's lives are constantly changing. Virtually all of the citations in this text are from the 1990's in order to provide the most current possible perspectives, there are more than 1300 new references in this new edition. * Balanced coverage of topics, in a well-organized sequence. Students learn about many topics (i.e., Welfare issues, pregnancy, and women's retirement) that are central in many women's lives but are not consistently covered in other texts. In addition, the sequence of chapters is logical: 2 intro chapters, 2 developmental chapters, 3 chapters on gender comparisons, 3 chapters concerned with romantic/sexual relationships; 3 chapters related to physical and mental health; 1 chapter on old age; and a chapter looking toward the future of the discipline. New to this edition: * Very thorough updating of the book. This allows both students and professors to benefit from the most current info in a discipline that changes very rapidly. * More inclusion of direct quotes from women. This will raise the interest level of the text with the students, and will provide professors with more qualitative information. * Chapters now begin with vignettes to draw readers into the chapter. * More inclusion of cross-cultural material. This allows for students to have a better understanding of gender issues within the context of other cultures. * The Women and Work chapter was updated to include the most recent data on employment statistics. * The Women and Physical Health chapter has been updated to reflect the changing data on health issues, social class information, and new perspectives on health care. * The Violence Against Women chapter has been updated to reflect the changing attitudes toward rape and battering.

Review:
"In general, the writing style is terrific. The author comes across as a person!!! The occasional insertion of comments about her own students reveals a genuine ability to listen to and learn from her students. I don't see how students can fail to respond positively to this technique. I find the level of writing to be a good one for my students in general (not too hard, not too easy, and pleasantly 'engaging')." "One of the most wonderful features of this book is the inclusion of many demonstrations and exercises. They can be done in class in some cases, and can be done outside class in other cases. They require little preparation and can be done by anyone, regardless of how few resources or equipment a school has in hand. They are thoughtful and instructive. I love them!"
