PreSchool-Grade 1 The Gumble twins are sur prised, when, one day at the beach, an iceberg washes ashore with a mammoth trapped inside. Once unfrozen, the mammoth carts the twins back home. They discover that the mammoth eats buttercups, so Mom bakes a buttercup pie, and everyone celebrates with a pic nic. Readers will be justifiably disap pointed when all the twins do with their extraordinary pet is ride her home. Nei ther her size nor her uniqueness adds much to the plot; books such as the ``Clifford the Big Red Dog'' series (Scholastic) by Norman Bridwell or Ber nard Most's If the Dinosaurs Came Back (HBJ, 1978) are far more imaginative. Other irritations include an annoying tendency for the text to alternate be tween first and third person for no appar ent reason and the misleading sugges tion that buttercups are a delicacy, when in fact they are poisonous to both man and animals. The watercolor illlustra tions are whimsical, but unfortunately not special enough to make up for the book's lack of an engaging plot. Cath ryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Li brary

This picture book is both quirky and intriguing, all the more so because of the promise that it is to be followed by three other volumes: Our Mammoth Goes to School, Our Mammoth in the Snow and Our Mammoth Has a Baby. The Gumble twins, Saturday and Bing, are at the beach one day when a giant block of ice drifts ashore. The ice starts to melt, and inside they find a giant woolly mammoth. Accordingly, they ride the beast home to the trailer they share with their unflappable mother, who graciously accepts this newcomer to the household. Poet Mitchell's eloquent prose accentuates the story's deadpan humor. Lamont creates characters with great verveher mammoth is an unforgettable creature. The book blends commonplace elements with fantastic ones, in much the same way that a child imagines them. Ages 4-8.
