On December 7, 1941, Americans were shocked to hear that Pearl Harbor had been devastated in a Japanese air raid. The harbor was believed invulnerable because of its isolation and the highly developed security net surrounding it. Theodore Taylor looks at Japanese intelligence work and at American anti-intelligence efforts, which were often careless or ineffective. He shows that although the United States possessed advanced technology such as radar and Purple, a top-secret code breaker, the information gathered was often discarded or misclassified.
