Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Toni hates vegetables, meat, fish, desserts--"the only thing she really liked was TOMATO SOUP." Dozing, Toni meets the "sneaker genie," who fulfills her wish for tomato soup . . .by making it pour from the sink, fill the swimming pool, rain from the sky, and even squirt tomato soup tears from her eyes. Waking up, Toni supposes she's had a horrible nightmare, and leaps out of bed into her sneakers--which are filled with tomato soup. Although much briefer and lacking the humor of Judi and Ron Barrett's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (Atheneum, 1978), Haddon plays on young children's obsession with food. Bold, sometimes garish watercolor illustrations feature flat, cartoonlike people and animals with skewed facial features and skinny, boneless-looking limbs. Alert readers will find many visual gags in the busy pictures, but the overall effect is not very palatable. --Susan H. Patron, Los Angeles Public Library
