9780143121053: Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: An Insider's Look at the World of Flea Markets, Antiques, and Collecting

Killer Stuff and Tons of Money: Seeking History and Hidden Gems is an insider's look at the rich and sometimes hilarious subculture of antiques, collecting, and flea markets, replete with arcane traditions and high drama. It's a thoroughly vibrant and inspiring account of a self-made man making his way to the top of a cutthroat field, one that rewards esoteric interests, patient study, and a passion for objects--a never-ending search for the "holy grail." Over a period of five years, Maureen Stanton intermittently shadowed charistmatic, self-taught dealer, Curt Avery, as he strives to up his game in the antiques world heirarchy (starting fifteen years earlier as a flea market vendor, and steadily rising through deep research, hard work, and "buying mistakes"). The reader's peer behind the scenes at tense, comical auctions where Avery uses subterfuge to foil his competitors, at low-end flea markets where he plucks gems off less knowledgeable dealer's tables as the sun rises, to high-end antiques shows where he's relegated to the back of the hall but still does well, and everything in-between. Along the way, Stanton offers lively histories of the auction, flea markets, collecting (and the psychology of collecting), the perils of fakes and reproductions (including an interview of a master "restoration" expert of Windsor chairs whose doctored chairs have fooled major auction houses), and mini-biographies of objects people love and collect: Windsor chairs, weathervanes, six-board blanket chests, opium bottles, oujia boards, forks, marbles, shot glasses, African American heritage objects, Shaker furniture, comic books and contemporary collectibles. Readers look behind-the-curtains at a taping of "Antiques Roadshow" and look at how eBay has affected the antiques trade (for worse for some dealers, and for better for "cyber pickers"). Killer Stuff and Tons of Money is exhaustively researched but engagingly written book about a fascinating cultural pasttime, vocation, passion, even obsession--the great hunt for treasure.
