"Superb...a series of masterly drawn glimpses into the storymaking art of one of Africa's great modern literary geniuses." -Alan Cheuse, NPR

A selection of short stories written to date by Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer, Life Times reveals her acute understanding of human nature and paints a fascinatingly original portrait of South Africa. Whether focusing on politics, sexuality, race, love, or loss, Gordimer maps out the terrain of human relationships with razor-sharp psychological insight and a stunning lack of sentimentality. Complex and multifaceted, her stories challenge us, time and again, to examine the conflict between our actions and our unspoken desires. This powerful collection, which includes two new stories, is a testament to Gordimer's literary genius and the ongoing power and relevance of her vision.

About the Author:

Nadine Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1991. She lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.

From Booklist:

“Life Times” indeed. Born in South Africa in 1923, and a resident of Johannesburg since 1948, Gordimer began writing about her conflictful world at a very young age. The short story is her favorite literary form and the perfect vessel for her keen observations of family and social life in a country where racial, class, language, and gender divides have been so zealously guarded and so courageously breached. An antiapartheid activist, Gordimer earned the 1991 Nobel Prize in Literature in part by writing exacting, unflinching stories about how hate and injustice poison and warp every interaction. This grand gathering, the fiction companion to her essay collection, Telling Times: Writing and Living, 1954–2008 (2010), showcases Gordimer’s gift for concentrating the many forms of suffering humankind instigates and endures within calamitous and transforming moments. Her cutting stories dramatize with fluent specificity the evolution of liberation in South Africa. But they are also headline-fresh and timelessly universal as Gordimer, skeptical and compassionate, reveals how intimately entwined politics and private lives are, and how there is no such thing as apartness. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Nobel laureate Gordimer is a literary giant, and this milestone volume will draw readers familiar with and new to her fiction. --Donna Seaman
