Why’d I do it? I suppose it’s the only question that really matters.
Seventeen-year-old Crow will stop at nothing to protect her younger sister—even if it costs her her own life. But then she’s given a chance to come back and make things right. There are a few catches, though. First, she won’t come back as herself. And before she can set things straight, she’ll have to figure out what’s what—and things aren’t exactly as clear-cut as she remembered.
Powerful and hard-hitting, this is a compelling story about what it means to live your life—for your own sake—from an award-winning author.

Desperately trying to keep Will from harming her sister, Adele, 18-year-old Crow sacrifices her own life to destroy his. But when Crow is given a second chance to put things right, she is sent back in time for a walkabout in a “loaner body” as Shane, a 13-year-old girl. Failing in her mission to prevent her past mistakes but with time still available, she returns for a third chance as Shane, this time a 19-year-old boy in the same but modified body. During her walkabouts, Crow (as Shane) twice befriends the young lady who she once was. Consequently, she is afforded the opportunity to see people and things from a new and different perspective and realizes that what she believed wasn’t always exactly true. The premise is intriguing at the outset, but the walkabout as a young man adds unnecessary layers, sidetracking the intent. Nevertheless, the story raises many compelling questions: Why do we believe the things we do? Can one change the past? What might happen if you could? Grades 7-10. --Jeanne Fredriksen
