Gervase Phinn is offered the post of County Inspector of Schools in North Yorkshire. As he reveals in this warm and wonderfully humorous account, his first year was quite an educational experience. He learns to appreciate the countryside and meets some larger than life characters, from lords, farmers, teachers, priests and caretakers to a host of endearing and disarming children who know exactly how to speak their mind, often in surprising - and very entertaining - ways!

Gervase Phinn has written an entertaining memoir of his first year as a school inspector in North Yorkshire. His love of children and his job comes through in the stories he recounts of overseeing teachers and curriculum in this rural area of England. However, his audio delivery is stilted, with pauses in unnatural places that make him sound like he is speaking to someone who has difficulty with English. The monotone delivery does not convey the enthusiasm that the words do. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
