9780141346434: Danny the Champion of the World

"A true genius . . . Roald Dahl is my hero" - David Walliams

Phizz-whizzing new branding for the world's No.1 storyteller, Roald Dahl!

Exciting, bold and instantly recognisable with Quentin Blake's inimitable artwork.

Danny thinks his dad is the most marvellous and exciting father a boy could wish for. Life is happy and peaceful in their gipsy caravan, until one day Danny discovers his dad has been breaking the law. What's more, soon Danny has to join his father as they attempt to pull off a daring and devilish plot against their horrible, greedy neighbour, Mr Victor Hazell.

Roald Dahl, the best-loved of children's writers, was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. After school in England he went to work for Shell in Africa. He began to write after "a monumental bash on the head", sustained as an RAF pilot in World War II. Roald Dahl died in 1990.

Quentin Blake is one of the best-known and best-loved children's illustrators and it's impossible now to think of Roald Dahl's writings without imagining Quentin Blake's illustrations.

Review:

: "My father, without the slightest doubt, was the most marvellous and exciting father any boy ever had". Danny feels very lucky. He adores his life with his father, living in a gypsy caravan, listening to his stories, tending their gas station, puttering around the workshop, and occasionally taking off to fly home-built gas balloons and kites. His father has raised him on his own, ever since Danny's mother died when he was four months old. Life is peaceful and wonderful ... until he turns 9 and discovers his father's one vice. Soon Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible plot ever attempted against nasty Victor Hazell, a wealthy landowner with a bad attitude. Can they pull it off? If so, Danny will truly be the champion of the world. Danny is right up to Roald Dahl's impishly brilliant standards. An intense and beautiful father-son relationship is balanced with subtle escapades that will have even the most rigid law-abider rooting them on. Dahl's inimitable way with words leaves the reader simultaneously satisfied and itching for more. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

Review:

"This is one of the great (and very few) books about a boy's love for his father, told in a non-sentimental way." (Michael Rosen S Magazine, Sunday Express)

"A triumph. It is the most beguiling book . . . and wildly, hilariously funny. If ever a book were for all the family, this is it" ( Evening Standard)

Book Description Puffin/Penguin Books Ltd, 2013. Softcover. Book Condition: New. When Danny was merely four years old, his mother passed away. Ever since, he has lived with his father, William, in a Gypsy caravan, which William used as a filling station and garage. When Danny turns seven, his father teaches him about the world, and in particular, seven things that he would usually learn much later. Two years later, Danny discovers that his father poaches pheasants from a nearby estate. One day, his father fails to return from his poaching trip, and Danny goes to investigate. He finds his father trapped, and he brings him back home after freeing him. The estate belongs to a wealthy Mr. Hazel who hosts a shooting party every year and invites several notable people. The trap had been set there to discourage any poachers from trespassing. Angry that his father was injured, Danny decides to get back at Mr. Hazel by doing just what Mr. Hazel thought to prevent: capturing all the pheasants in the estate so that there would be none left to shoot.
