Winter has come to Moominvalley which means that it's time for Moomintroll's best friend, Snufkin, to travel south. All the excitement of the falling snow does nothing to comfort Moomintroll whose sadness at his friend's departure is movingly captured in Tove Jansson's illustrations. What will make him feel better? Gently exploring the nature of friendship, this is a picture book for all ages.

Tove Jansson was born in Helsingfors, Finland, in 1914. Her mother was a caricaturist who designed 165 of Finland's stamps and her father was a sculptor. She studied painting in Finland, Sweden and France, and subsequently became a book illustrator. Her extraordinary illustrative style is seen as a design classic the world over. Originally written in Swedish, the Moomintroll books have been translated into 34 languages and adapted for television, film, radio and opera. Tove Jansson lived alone on a small island in the gulf of Finland, where most of her books were written. She died in 2001Review:
"What makes Jansson's comics timelessly delightful and particularly timely in today's culture is that she addresses serious, often uncomfortable issues -- uncertainty, heartbreak, mortality, natural disasters, our ample human imperfections -- with great compassion and warmth, never chastising or preaching but instead celebrating the light in life and aiming its generous beam at the dark."-Maria Popova, Brainpickings
"In Jansson's narratives, whether tilted to children or adults, a debate can be felt rustling under the surface: it's between voices that speak for the open hand of compromise and diplomacy and those that see the truth as naked or nothing, wills that would rather do whatever the hell they like."-James Guida, New Yorker
