Gene Kemp was born in the Midlands, the youngest of a large family. She won a scholarship to the local Grammar School and then an Exhibition to Exeter University where she read English. Her first children's book, THE PRIME OF TAMWORTH PIG, was published in 1972. Her most famous title, THE TURBULENT TERM OF TYKE TILER, won the Carnegie Medal and the Other Award and has become a modern classic.
