The Italian poet Eugenio Montale (1896-1981) is best known for the intense lyrical vision of his first three collections of poetry: Ossi di seppia (1925), Le Occasioni (1939) and La bufera e altro (1956). In Satura (1971) a new disillusioned voice emerged, commenting ironically on post-war Italian society and debunking his own previous poetic myths. He won the 1975 Nobel Prize for literature.
Harry Thomas lives in Massachusetts and has edited Thomas Hardy's poetry for Penguin.
