About the Author:

Anthony Hill is a Canberra based writer, former journalist & speechwriter for the Governor General. In addition to this, he & his family ran an antique shop for 5 years in a small country town in New South Wales. The experience formed the basis of his first two books, the Bunburyists, & Antique Furniture in Australia. His first children's book, Birdsong was followed by his award winning novella, The Burnt Stick. He is also the author of Spindrift & Forbidden. Soldier Boy & Young Digger are the products of the author's extensive research & travel to the Gallipoli peninsula & the battlefields of the Great War.

Review:

A model of historical writing ... A significant contribution to the nation's culture.  NSW Premier's Award

Hill's book is historically accurate. Teachers can feel confident that Soldier Boy is just about as close as you can get to an accurate historical representation in a novel form. Christopher Bantick, Canberra Times.

As a teenage Anzac, Jim Martin is seen as a figure to whom today's teenagers can relate ... perhaps we are now seeing John Simpson being replaced by Jim Martin, carefully chosen to appeal to a new generation and to continue the Anzac legend. John Connor, Australian Book Review.

Book Description Penguin Aus., 2001. Paperback. Book Condition: New. On 28 June 1915, young James Martin sailed from Melbourne aboard the troopship Berrima ? bound, ultimately, for Gallipoli. He was just fourteen years old. Soldier Boy is Jim's extraordinary true story, the story of a young and enthusiastic school boy who became Australia's youngest known Anzac. Four months after leaving his home country he would be numbered among the dead, just one of so many soldier boys who travelled halfway around the world for the chance of adventure. This is, however, just as much the story of Jim's mother, Amelia Martin. It is the heartbreaking tale of the mother who had to let him go, of his family who lost a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend. It is about Amelia's boy who, like so many others, just wanted to be in on the action. [Url removed]. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # MM-40015772
