One school of thought regards the TAO TE CHING as the work of Lao Tzu, an author of the sixth century BC, who was a native of Hu Hsien and an historian in charge of the archives in Chou. He set out the teachings of the Taoist school and cultivated the way of virtue. Some say he lived to be over 200.
Another theory suggests that it is a later anthology, compiled in the fourth century BC.
