Plastic case/NF w/light surface wear. COVER ART: Detail from The Spirit of Bells by H.M. Brock, from Christmas Tales archived in the Dickens House Museum, London. The Chimes is the 2nd of five Christmas Books by Victorian writer, novelist & social critic Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870). Written in late 1844, this novella recounts the tale of elderly, poverty stricken Trotty Veck, who is short on in rent & in debt to local shops. Like Scrooge,Trotty is guided by a specter through scenes that refocus his views on the harsh realities of life in Victorian London. Here, read by Geoffrey Palmer, the The Chimes is presented in an audiobook on 2 cassettes. It is New Year's Eve. Trotty, a "ticket-porter" (that is, a casual messenger), finds himself on the very church steps where he plies his trade. Filled with gloom at newspaper reports of crime & immorality, he wonders whether working classes like himself are not simply born bad, short notions of self-improvement, have no right to live. The chimes are those of the church bells. The book is divided into 4 parts named "quarters", after the quarter chimes marking movements of the clock. Seller Inventory # 020298
