Ever-optimistic Platypus sets out to fly his kite, to paint and more, but nothing goes right. He decides to go back to bed and finds comfort in a forgotten banana he discovers under his pillow, and Bruce, his cuddly toy. Later, when it stops raining, he takes his go-cart for a ride and bumps into a tree, dislodging his kite, lost in the tree at the start of the story. Now the world looks a better place for Platypus!

PreSchool-Grade 1-"Today is my lucky day," the duck-billed hero declares just before his kite gets stuck in a tree. Then, attempts to paint pictures are ruined by wind and rain. When he trips and falls on his way home, he decides to go back to bed where he finds a banana and his favorite stuffed animal. Cheered on by these discoveries, Platypus tackles his closet, a veritable treasure trove of beloved toys. A ride on his go-cart brings the story full circle; he crashes into a tree, causing the kite to fall and land in his lap, and he realizes that, "Today is my lucky day, after all!" Riddell's clean and clear ink-and-watercolor pictures perfectly depict the madcap adventures of this lovable hero who will always see the glass as half full. Pair this story with Judith Viorst's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (Atheneum, 1972) for a different way of handling a day when everything goes wrong. Platypus gets an A+ for attitude.
