SLAVE UNIT

A machine controlled by or through another machine. A subsidiary device that is controlled by or responds to the primary or master device, e.g. a computer connected to and controlled by a master computer, a flash slave unit in photography that responds to the light output of the first flash.

DASHPOT

A device to absorb energy and hence dampen motion, e.g. to cushion shocks or to reduce bridge vibrations. It is often a piston immersed in a cylinder carrying a viscous fluid such as oil. The damping force generated by a dashpot on any attached element is directly proportional to the velocity of that element.

FARADAY CAGE

[elec] Also Faraday shield, Faraday screen. A shield, of wire mesh or parallel wires usually connected to another conductor which is grounded, to protect whatever is inside from electric fields generated by static electricity - it collects stray charges and stores them on the outside surface. Used e.g. to protect sensitive radio or communications equipment.

Professor David Blockley is the Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Bristol University and a former President of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
