A discussion of fundamental Catholic doctrines by one of their most famous converts. Rose Pemberton,a recently orphaned young woman arrives at the Holland Park home of her ageing aunts Teresa and Helen and of her uncle Father James, who has been confined to a wheelchair for many years. She is in the company of Michael Dennis a middle aged family friend and her mother's executor with whom Rose has been having an affair. The three old people are so much in fear of death that they lock up any room in which someone has died. They have so few rooms left that a third floor bedroom is now the sitting room. When Rose and Michael's affair is revealed both aunts are scandalised because Michael is married and a Protestant. Michaeel's wife appears and makes a hysterical attempt at suicide in front of Rose, taking a bottle of pill.Rose prevents this, takes the pills herself and dies. This has a profound effect on Teresa who defies the tradition of years and claims the room in which Rose committed suicide as her own.
