Born in 1759, the son of an Ayrshire cottar, Burns developed an early inclination for literature. From 1784-1788, whilst farm-labouring, he wrote much of his best poetry including the famous POEMS, CHIEFLY IN THE SCOTTISH DIALECT. To supplement thefamily income, Burns took a position as an excise man, concentrating on song-writing from 1787. He died at the age 37, his health undermined by rheumatic fever.
