9780140385427: Mr. Lincoln's Drummer

Willie might be too young to be a fighter, but he's brave enough to be a drummer.

Ten-year-old Willie Johnston is too young to be a soldier in Mr. Lincoln's army. So he joins as a drummer boy, instead. Part of Willie's job is rousing the troops in the morning with his drum—the other part is being the last to retreat in battles. In this true story, Willie shows he's brave enough to keep beating his drum, but will he be lucky enough to survive the war?

"Scrupulously researched and overflowing with evocative detail . . . Willie's tale is authentic and engaging."—Kirkus Reviews

About the Author:

G. Clifton Wisler is the author of more than sixty-three books, many of them historical fiction for young adults. His ability to bring history alive in accessible and engaging ways make him a popular author for young readers.Mr. Wisler lives in Plano, Texas, where he continues to work on his doctoral dissertation on the history of the Ninth Texas Infantry Regiment in the Civil War.

From Booklist:

Gr. 5-7. When his Pa joins the Union army as a soldier, 11-year-old Willie goes along as a drummer boy. They're assigned to different companies of the Third Vermont Regiment, and Willie shares a tent with some older boys from back home. As the Army of the Potomac marches through Virginia, their war consists mainly of camp life, discomfort, and retreat, though they see action at Lee's Mill and Malvern Hill. Willie meets Lincoln twice and receives the Congressional Medal of Honor. Despite the publisher's disclaimer that "No character in this book is intended to represent any actual person," Wisler's acknowledgments and epilogue concern the archival records he researched and the historical people represented in his novel, including Willie Johnston and other members of the regiment. Wisler achieves a credible presentation of camp life, though like many books based on real people and incidents, its ties to the facts seem to hamper it as fiction. Carolyn Phelan
