Linking St Paul's Cathedral on the north bank with the Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre on the south, the Millennium Bridge is central London's first river crossing since the opening of Tower Bridge in 1894. The book traces the creation of the bridge from its inception to its re-opening in the autumn of 2001, and includes sections on its design by Norman Foster, Roger Ridsdill-Smith and Sir Anthony Caro, its construction, and the work done by the Arup engineers to correct its famous sway. As one of the most impressive additions to London's public space in the last fifty years, the Millennium Bridge will attract enormous public interest when it reopens.

Synopsis:
The Millennium Bridge is the first London Bridge across the Thames since Tower Bridge in 1894. It represents a unique collaboration of architect, sculptor and engineer (Sir Norman Foster, Sir Anthony Caro and Chris Wise of Ove Arup), brought together by an FT-sponsored competition which was the catalyst for an historic cross-river partnership involving, amongst others, the city of London and Southwark boroughs. The Bridge links St Pauls to the Tate Gallery at Bankside and is expected to play a significant role, alongside the Tate and New Globe Theatre, in the regeneration of the south side of the river. This book is a celebration of this London landmark, describing a remarkable marriage of design and engineering.
About the Author:
Deyan Sudjic is Director of the Design Museum. He was born in London, and studied architecture in Edinburgh. He has worked as a critic for the Observer and The Sunday Times, as the editor of Domus in Milan, as the director of the Venice Architecture Biennale, and as a curator in Glasgow, Istanbul and Copenhagen. He is the author of B is for Bauhaus, The Language of Things and The Edifice Complex.
