This omnibus contains two books which are not strictly part of the Fairacre series, although the town of Caxley does feature in the books. The idea of writing a book about Caxley came to Miss Read one day when she was standing at an upstairs window overlooking the market place of her own local town, Newbury. 'What a setting for a novel,' she thought. 'I could have two tradesmen who live over shops, one prosperous and one struggling, whose circumstances become reversed during the course of the story.' THE MARKET SQUARE and THE HOWARDS OF CAXLEY chart the story of two families, the Norths and the Howards, from the time of Edward VII to the 1950s. The books are as full of charm as her Thrush Green and Fairacre series.
