About the Author:

Betty Kirkpatrick was editor of the Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary and reference Director at Chambers Books for six years before embarking on a freelance career. This has included editing the last edition of Roget's Thesaurus, writing a weekly column for the Glasgow Herald and editing and writing a wide variety of major reference works. She now lives in Edinburgh.
