"Remarkable" said "The Wall Street Journal" about Roger Scruton's "Modern Philosophy." "It will be enjoyed by academic specialists and armchair philosophers alike." Now this emminent philosopher takes the discipline beyond theory and "intellectualism, " presenting it in an empirical, accessible, and practical light. The result is a useful guide to "doing" raher than "studying" philosophy. Scruton looks at philosophy through a prism rather than as an "ism, " and through that prism the reader gains a working knowledge of philosophy - and of reality. "An Intelligent Person's Guide to Philosophy" is a refreshing antidote to late-twentieth-century fuzziness.

Review:
'This is a marvellous book which gives back to philosophy the sweep and depth it once had before linguistic analysis reduced it to a study of words and their meaning. Scruton is unafraid to take on the big topics... with imagination and verve.' Jonathan Sacks, Financial Times
About the Author:
Roger Scruton is the author of a number of books, including Modern Philosophy and A Short History of Philosophy. Formerly Professor of Aesthetics at Birkbeck College, London University, and a visiting professor at Boston University, he lives in Wiltshire, England.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Philosophy's the 'love of wisdom', can be approached in two ways: by doing it, or by studying how it has been done," so writes the eminent philosopher Roger Scruton. In this user-friendly book, he chooses to introduce philosophy by doing it. Taking the discipline beyond theory and "intellectualism," he presents it in an empirical, accessible, and practical light. The result is not a history of the field but a vivid, energetic, and personal account to guide the reader making his or her own venture into philosophy. Addressing a range of subjects from freedom, God, reality, and morality, to sex, music, and history, Scruton argues philosophy's relevance not just to intellectual questions, but to contemporary life. A renowned philosopher takes this enigmatic discipline beyond theory and "intellectualism" to present a user-friendly guide for "practicing" philosophy in the late twentieth century.
