9780140250961: Snow Angels

Now a major motion picture from Warner Independent starring Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale

In Stewart O'Nan's "Snow Angels," Arthur Parkinson is fourteen during the dreary winter of 1974. Enduring the pain of his parents' divorce, his world is shattered when his beloved former babysitter, Annie, falls victim to a tragic series of events. The interlinking stories of Arthur's unraveling family, and of Annie's fate, form the backdrop of this intimate tale about the price of love and belonging, told in a spare, translucent, and unexpectedly tender voice.

Review:

"A thriller of the heart, at once suspenseful and emotionally absorbing." --"Newsday "(New York)

"Beautiful and harrowing...An exquisite double helix, each of its two strands the tale of an unraveling family, curving in tenuous but essential relation to the other." --"Elle"

"Stunning...A truthful and deeply sad picture of the American hinterland, which has lost religion and maybe also lost its capacity for sustained love....Wonderfully effective...O'Nan sees with a vengeance." --"The New York Times Book Review"

"Haunting...a whole that's much more than the sum of its parts...Moving, beautifully constructed, morally complex." --"The Washington Post Book World"

"Shines with a cold, stark light...Strangely beautiful." --"Los Angeles Times"

From the Author:

A good book that brought back lots of memorys.
I thought this was a very good read. What was most interesting to me was the town of Butler, Pa. where I lived and was a businessman for eighteen years. Stewart was right on with the names of places he talked about; like Susans Motel with the waterbeds. Many an adultrous meetings were held there by people I new. Natili's, where I spent some time having a few cocktails with my drinking buddys and the Burger Hut where we would end up after a night of drinking for something to eat. I knew the owners of these establishments very well. I also was an owner of one of the establishments mentioned in this novel. I was managing partner of the Rusty Nail from 1973-1980. Butler is a town that has a lot to say and could fill many books, both fiction and non fiction. For a mill town, this was one great party place, especially in the 1970's and the 1980's. This town has some wonderfully interesting characters.

Mr. O'nan did a wonderful job of depicting this town. His book fits this town to a tee.
