About the Author:

Nigel Harris specializes in development studies at University College, London. He has written extensively on economic development in the Third World. His previous book, Of Bread and Guns: The Third World Economy in Crisis (1983) achieved much critical acclaim. He has lived and worked in Malaysia, Nigeria and India, and frequently visits Mexico and East Asia.
