The uprising of the Armed Forces Movement, led by General Spinola, in April 1974, put an end to a regime that had held power since 1926. Although an almost impenetrable wall of silence surrounded the details of Portugal's internal affairs at that time, this regime was in fact one of the most repressive in Europe, and was largely the work of one man, Antonio de Oliveira Salazar.
