Twelve contributors, nine of whom live in Greece year-round, combine historical and cultural insights with a feel for modern Greece as they take the reader through the city of Athens, the remote northern and central reaches of the mainland and the Peloponnese. The "Penguin Guide to Greece" aims to provide comprehensive coverage of the Greek islands, over 35 in all, including, Crete and Corfu, with a special emphasis on making them easily accessible to a first-time visitor.

These latest additions to Penguin's popular travel series are identical in tone, scope, and format to the earlier guides ( Canada, Mexico, LJ 2/1/89). Each title, written by long-time local residents and/or reporters, captures the culture, flavor, and history of the country. Intended for use by experienced travelers making repeat visits, the guides emphasize lesser-known sights, nightlife, restaurants, shops, and hotels frequented more by locals than by tourists. Major city coverage is excellent, but side trip information is far more general and often sketchy. Some practical standard travel information is included along with a historical chronology, cultural history, and maps. Excellent as supplemental resources. First-timers are better served by more detailed guides such as Fodor's or Baedecker's.
