Drawn from Jack London's experiences during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897, these stories bring to life the harrowing hardships and rugged codes of behaviour that defined life in the lawless wilderness. London's heroes display such manly virtues ascourage, loyalty, and steadfastness as they confront life-threatening weather, dangerous beasts, and evil-minded men. Yet London breaks free of stereotypical figures and one-dimensional plots to expose both the psychological and social forces that determine his heroes' actions. The uneasy relationship between the Native Americans and whites lies at the heart of many of the stories, while others reflect London's growing awareness of the destruction wrought by the white incursion on Indian culture
