I Put a Spell on You: The Autobiography of Nina Simone

9780140171884: I Put a Spell on You: The Autobiography of Nina Simone

This is the extraordinary story, told in her own words, of one the great singers and musicians of her generation. Born the sixth child of a preacher's family in North Carolina, Nina Simone initially showed immense talent at classical piano and won a scholarship to the Juillard Music School. She became a nightclub entertainer almost by accident and swiftly rose to international stardom. The book recounts her 1960s civil rights activities, stormy marriage and tragic love affair. Almost forgotten, she fled to Europe, survived a suicide attempt, and has come back to grace the international music scene.

Review:

"Ms. Simone's vocal and piano style make her a culture unto herself."

Lincoln Center Institute Resource Center blog, 7/9/09
Compelling, honest, and powerful. It is meticulously packed with historical information on America during some of its ugliest times, coming from the voice of someone who lived through it everyday a voice of a woman who devoted her adult life to changing the face of society From a musical standpoint alone, "I Put a Spell On You" is an extremely valuable read. However, this would also be a unique, relevant and worthwhile addition to any high-school or collegiate history library, or anyone with an interest in the civil rights movement both politically and artistically.
