In the final volume of the "Alexandrian Quartet", Darley returns to Alexandria now caught by war-fever. The conflagration has its effect on his circle - on Nessim and Justine, Balthazar and Clea, Mountolive and Pombal. The story is supplemented by music from Debussy, Ravel, Britten and Piazzola.

About the Author:

Lawrence Durrell was born in 1912 in India. He attended the Jesuit College at Darjeeling and St Edmund's School, Canterbury. His first literary work, The Black Book, appeared in Paris in 1938. His first collection of poems, A Private Country, was published in 1943, followed by the three Island books: Prospero's Cell, Reflections on a Marine Venus, about Rhodes, and Bitter Lemons, his account of life in Cyprus. Durrell's wartime sojourn in Egypt led to his masterpiece, The Alexandria Quartet, which he completed in southern France where he settled permanently in 1957. Between the Quartet and The Avignon Quintet he wrote the two-decker Tunc and Nunquam. His oeuvre includes plays, a book of criticism, translations, travel writing, and humorous stories about the diplomatic corps. Caesar's Vast Ghost, his reflections on the history and culture of Provence, including a late flowering of poems, appeared a few days before his death in Sommières in 1990.

Book Description Penguin. 1 Paperback(s), 1988. soft. Book Condition: New. The four novels of the Alexandria Quartet—Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive, and Clea—follow a circle of couples as they come together and part with growing and then waning passion in pre–World War II Egypt. In this final book, Darley returns with Melissa's daughter to the city and his circle of friends, now all caught up in wartime fever. He has given up writing their story, having realized he can never know what the lives of Nessim and Justine, Balthazar and Clea, Mountolive and Pombal are really about. Yet when he falls in love with Clea, and she with him, Darley begins to understand how life itself is a fiction. The threads of the series are brought together here, but the story remains open-ended, like a cycle ready to repeat. "A massive, marvelously concrete, deeply felt statement of faith. [Lawrence Durrell's] style glows with the mineral deposits of many cultures. One of the most important works of our time has come to an end."—NYTBR 287. Bookseller Inventory # 60996
