9780140110852: The Belles Lettres Papers

The everyday insanity of life at a fictional literary review. The journal Belles Lettres has a long and storied history, which is what enticed young editor Frank Page over its threshold in the first place. But Frank did not anticipate the infighting, backstabbing, and utter oddity that are all business as usual at the respected magazine. Still, nothing can match Frank's thrill at discovering a new literary phenom.

But the book industry seems to be on the decline. Integrity is going extinct as conglomerate giants gobble up smaller organs and trample innovation and daring into the muck of commerciality. At least Frank's position gives him a front-row seat at the publishing world's fight of the century, as deposed editorial icon Jonathan Margin takes on self-serving corporate overseer Newbold Press in an ink-splattered battle to the death.

About the Author:

Simmons, Charles was born on August 17, 1924 in New York City. Son of Charles and Mary (Landrigan) Simmons. He served with the Army of the United States, 1943-1946.

From Library Journal:

Simmons's most interesting novel since Powdered Eggs (1964) depicts life at a fiction review, Belles Lettres, as seen through the eyes of up-and-coming editor, Frank Page. Page becomes interested in the review as a result of an undergraduate paper; his enthusiasm is rewarded with an offer to join the staff. As he recounts the journal's history from its founding in 1951, through several editorial regimes, to about 1985, he touches on such issues as office politics, sexual harassment, the 215 best writers in America, and the discovery of nine additional Shakespeare sonnets. The antics of Simmons's characters, including Arthur Folio, Skippy Overleaf, Ben Boards, and Virginia Wrappers, keep the reader chuckling. Recommended for general readers, this novel should prove especially amusing for those in editing or publishing. William Gargan, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., CUNY
