This is a fascinating book with rules for board games from around the world and different periods of history. There are boards designed to be xeroxed and assembled by the reader. It gives instructions for making playing pieces, spinners, and teetotums. It gives the rules for games clearly and concisely, & includes background & historical information. Games included are: Game of Goose -- A race game from the 16th cent Nine Men's Morris -- A game from Ancient Egypt Pachisi -- A game from India. Ludo is a simpler version of it. Snakes and Ladders Alquerque -- A game from Ancient Egypt, similar to checkers. Also includes variations: Fanorona, Fighting Serpents, and Peralikatuma. Solitaire -- The board game, not cards. A single player eliminates pieces by jumping over them, trying to get down to one. Halma -- Invented during the 19th cent., this is an earlier form of Chinese Checkers. The book also includes the rules for Chinese Checkers. Mancala -- This game is from Africa and was also played in Ancient Egypt. It involves capturing stones from a series of cups. Steeplechase -- A race game from the 19th cent. that resembles a horse race. Queen's Guard -- A game from the 19th cent. that involves surrounding one piece (the "queen") with guards. Chivalry -- A battle board game from the 19th cent. Go-Bang -- A strategy game from Japan, a variation on Go. This section also includes Hasami Shogi (also from Japan) and Dara (from Africa). Seega -- A game from Egypt that involves surrounding and capturing pieces. Fox and Geese -- A game where a single piece (the "fox") tries to capture the other player's pieces (the "geese") while the other player tries to block it. There are several variations. Draughts -- Better known in the U.S. as Checkers. The book includes several variations on the game. Backgammon -- The book explains the history of this ancient game and includes a couple of variations.
