Bill Freedman is a professor of Biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he has taught for the past 25 years. He earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Department of Botany at the University of Toronto. Bill has researched many aspects of environmental science, including the ecological effects of forestry, acidification, toxic metals, sulfur dioxide, pesticides, eutrophication, and urban ecology. Bill is a Director of Science and Science Advisor to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. In addition to this book, he has also written Environmental Ecology (Academic Press, 1995), co-edited a book on Arctic ecology, and authored over 200 scientific papers and research reports.
In his spare time, Bill enjoys natural history, especially birding and botany in wild places, collecting antiques and folk art, and playing squash. Bill and his spouse, George-Anne Merrill, have two college-age children, Jonathan and Rachael.
