101 Principles for Positive Guidance with Young Children: Creating Responsive Teachers

Katharine C. Kersey and Marie L. Masterson

This guide to positive discipline in young children serves as an interactive resource in professional development seminars, as a training guide for administrators and their teachers in an early childhood center or in primary grades, or in a college course.  It has been field tested and used extensively throughout Virginia with numerous school district and preschool audiences and at state and national NAEYC sessions.

The 101 principles help adults become conscious of their own practices and beliefs about guiding children. The evidence-based principles encourage self-awareness about the ways an adult’s words, actions and responses influence the responses of children and others.

Whether working through this book in a group or attending a training session, Kersey and Masterson empower teachers to create responsive relationships with children and families by learning valuable skills in building children’s social-emotional competence. The philosophy of relational respect supports the "powerhouse tools" of authentic connection, enriched language, pro-social skill development and self-regulation.
