Aboriginal Peoples in Canada, eighth edition, provides a current, comprehensive introduction to Native Studies. Using both the majority and minority perspectives, it chronicles the changes that have taken place over the past century and how they have impacted upon Canadian and Aboriginal Peoples. The goal of the authors is to provide a critical interpretation of the events that have shaped Aboriginal-Euro-Canadian relations and that thus have formed the structure of Canadian society. With updated statistical material, recent research in Native studies, and expanded sections on the most relevant contemporary topics, this text offers a good balance between social and cultural issues, as well as historical, legal, and theoretical material for students in the field of Aboriginal, First Nations, and Native Studies.

It has an ‘in your face’ approach which I find is essential when teaching students who have little or no knowledge of the Native Peoples and their issues. This text is also strong in forcing students to challenge any stereotypes or racism they have acquired from the media, schooling or their family...[the] information is quite up to date considering the many issues which are changing daily in the area of Aboriginal land claims, residential school abuse resolutions, etc...it is by far the best I’ve encountered...Frideres and Gadacz deliver the facts to the students in a logical and understandable fashion...

I found the chapters...to be concise and informative with many relevant examples provided [and] up to date...One of the major strengths of the manuscript is the use of examples to support the narrative. By providing readers with a wide scope of examples the ability to understand the many complex issues discussed in the text is more likely...Overall Frideres and Gadacz have provided a readable and useful text.
