This entertaining and thorough book is far more than a quick browse along the aisles of a few select UK shopping sites, however. It takes you on a comprehensive tour of the web. Split into four main parts, the book looks at how to get onto the internet; finding your way around; and using web-based services; as well as explaining clearly how to make the most of the net's many multi-media features.

One of the main attractions of the internet is being able to download plenty of free software goodies. But where do you begin and what do you really need? Hughes helps by clearly describing all the different kinds of files from audio to video that you can freely transfer to your PC's desktop. The easy-to-follow sections on animation (which is becoming increasingly popular), web-based radio and live web cams will doubtless inspire a lot of surfers to go further. But the section on chat is unnecessarily complex. Readers could be directed much earlier to the popular web-based chat rooms where they can enjoy a virtual natter in a matter of seconds. There are handy tips on how to get in touch with your favourite celebrity, pointers on where to find a new job and, if you are looking for love in cyberspace, be sure to check out the computer dating page. The book comes with a CD Rom which links you up to Virgin Net.
