Synopsis

Tackling the problem of computerized diagnosis this book concentrates on a new architecture for diagnostic expert systems (BONES) and its use in medicine and vehicle maintenance. Opening with a consideration of the general problems associated with diagnosis, the author introduces a new method of determining the difficulty of diagnosis in a given domain and the appropriate type of diagnostic architecture. These domains fall into four distinct classes and Richard Barber concentrates on one of these looking at medicine, mechanics, geology and other physical systems. For the first time, four general and 15 specific criteria for judging successful diagnosis are presented, and 18 previous expert systems assessed using these. The BONES architecture is described in detail and applied to rheumatology and car repair. Using the 15 criteria described earlier, the author is able to demonstrate the superiority of BONES in comparison to earlier systems.

The book closes with a look at the areas in which BONES can be improved - in particular by replacing the BONES frame language with enhanced CLOS objects, industry standard object-oriented programming can be allied with knowledge representation, and a detailed recipe for CLOS metaobject programming to achieve this is outlined.
