Review:
The telecommunications industry encompasses hundreds of different technologies, which in turn have spawned many trade names, jargon terms and legal definitions. Those looking for a comprehensive introduction to the technologies, laws and marketing programmes that govern telecommunications need to read The Essential Guide to Telecommunications.

Author Annabel Z. Dodd begins by pointing out that telecommunications technologies have everything to do with signals moving over media. She then goes on to catalogue some of the various kinds of signals and media, covering traditional switched telephone service, dedicated lines, public branch exchanges (PBXs) and automatic call distributors (ACDs) along the way. After that foray into technology, she gets into the US telecommunications business environment, focusing heavily on the federal break-up of AT&T in 1984 and the Telecommunications Act of 1996. She then explains additional technologies: datacommunications; the Internet-ISDN, Frame Relay, and analogue modems all get attention. The author also pays plenty of attention to wireless solutions, including satellite communications.

Unlike Newton's Telecom Dictionary (which remains an excellent resource), this book can be successfully read from start to finish by a reader with practically no telecommunications' knowledge at the outset. Read and understand--that's what good technical books, like this one, enable you to do. --David Wall

"With jargon-free definitions, clear schematic drawings and its steady narrative drive,The Essential Guide to Telecommunications is a reassuring testament to the human ability to comprehend and communicate at some fundamental level even the most bewildering technology."

―David Warsh, The Boston Globe

"This book cuts through all the jargon and mysterious acronyms to give easily understood explanations of telecommunications, from the basics to the latest technology. I refer to it on a regular basis and constantly recommend it to others."

―Michael Rieke, Editor of the Dow Jones Bandwidth Intelligence Alert

"It is fair to say that Annabel Dodd has done more to demystify the industry for more people than anyone else in Massachusetts. For those who don't know bandwidth from a band saw or optical networks from an ophthalmologist, Dodd's book offers valuable insights into the products and services that fall under the telecommunications umbrella."

―Katherine Raphaelson, Director, Massachusetts Telecommunications Council

"This book is written for those who have little or no technical background. It's an easy-to-read overview of much of the technology available now and great if you have no patience for technical terminology."

―George Runkle, The Motley Fool, Inc.
