Appropriate as a core text for teaching stress at advanced undergraduate and MSc level within courses on health, and occupational or applied psychology. This book provides a broad, accessible introduction to the major issues relating to stress. It bridges the gap between popularised, or very basic, treatments of the subject on the one hand, and highly specialised academic research on the other, to give a good critical overview of the subject for undergraduate and Masters-level students.

Stress: Myth, Research and Theory

Fiona Jones and Jim Bright

Stress has become an issue which affects nearly every part of our lives, having an impact on our work, health and personal relationships. At the same time it remains a controversial phenomenon. Despite the high profile it has in the media and the public consciousness, there are many who consider stress a problematic term which has been used indiscriminately to describe a wide range of very different symptoms and problems.

This book attempts a clear overview of our current understanding of stress. It combines laboratory findings with real world research and looks at the limitations of both. Summarising current theory, it highlights some of the popular misconceptions about stress, providing a valuable resource in terms of suggestions for further reading and the guidance it provides through a developing and complex field.
